Semi engulfed in flames closes I-80 near Stockton, Iowa

SCOTT COUNTY, Iowa — Both lanes of traffic on I-80 were temporarily closed at 4:22 a.m. on Jan. 8 after a semi-truck caught on fire.

The truck was traveling eastbound on I-80 this morning when a loose wire got hot and sparked a fire, according to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office. The driver got out and tried to extinguish the fire, but it got out of control.

When fire fighters showed up, the truck was fully engulfed in flames. Watch the video below to see the charred remains of the truck on the side of the interstate.

Emergency crews extinguished the fire. No one was hurt.

As of 7:00 a.m., emergency crews were cleaning up the remains of the truck, and one lane on the eastbound side was blocked off. Both east and westbound sides were back open by 6:20 a.m.

A detour was routed through Durrant, Iowa while lanes were closed. Delays ranged up to 20 minutes.

The incident happened between Exit 280 (County Road Y30) and Exit 284 (County Road Y40) near Stockton, Iowa.

The Durrant Police Department was the first to report that a semi-truck was on fire and was the cause of the delay.
