Man arrested after leading police on chase from Hampton to Bettendorf

A driver was arrested after leading police on a chase across the river from Hampton, Illinois to Bettendorf, Iowa.

HAMPTON, Illinois -- A driver was arrested after leading police on a chase across the river from Hampton, Illinois to Bettendorf, Iowa.

A spokesperson from the Hampton Police Department said they initially tried to pull the driver over for speeding, Wednesday morning, December 19.  The driver fled, got on Interstate 80 and then exited in Bettendorf.

The driver, 35-year-old Chad Lewis Erwin, wound up driving 120 mph in a 55 mph zone, according to the affidavit from the Scott County District Court.   That was near Pleasant Valley Redi Mix, a construction materials company on State Street.

The vehicle Erwin was driving, a black Ford Fusion, was found to be stolen out of Rock Island as of December 9, read the affidavit.

Spike strips were set up near Grant Street and 23rd Street, said the affidavit.  Erwin "took evasive action to avoid spike strips," and ended up colliding with the driver-side door of an unmarked police squad.  The Fusion was wrecked in the crash.

The affidavit said Erwin then got out of the Fusion and ran off toward the Isle of Capri Casino.  After a short foot chase, Erwin was taken into custody.
