Illinois Lottery giving away 900 free Mega Millions tickets in the Quad Cities

The free tickets won’t help your odds any but it certainly won’t hurt!

MILAN, Illinois - The Illinois Lottery has given away 900 free Mega Millions tickets at the HyVee Foods in Milan, IL.

Thursday, October 18, 2018, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. shoppers lined the aisles for a chance to score this year's winning ticket.

This year's jackpot has increased to $970 million - making it the largest jackpot in the game's history and second largest jackpot in US lottery history.

When asked what people would do with the money if they won, many said they would give to those in need.

"Well I'd probably cry, probably share it with family,  charity, because I sure don't need all this kind of money," Pat Kernan said.

One couple said they would give back to the people closest to them, specifically naming a close friend who is battling cancer.

"She's had cancer for quite a few years," said David Foy.  He and his wife picked up a free lottery ticket at the store while they were buying flowers for their friend.  "It's spread, so she has to take chemo."

He said she would benefit more from their winnings than they would.  He mentioned they may try to help her out financially even if they didn't win.

A single winner could get a lump sum of $548 million if a cash payout is made.

The next drawing is Friday, October 19th, 2018.
