GLADSTONE, Illinois — An injured bald eagle was rescued on Thursday, October 11.
Members of the Western Illinois Animal Rescue (WIAR) in Monmouth, Illinois said they found the eagle on the side of the road near Lock and Dam 18.
WIAR shared the experience on Facebook, saying that the bird’s right wing was “severely broken” and that its bone was sticking out.
“We can only assume she got hit while trying to feed on a dead raccoon in the road,” read the post.
The nonprofit’s president Dan Porter and Tracy Jones, who they call their “fearless Raptor rescuer” captured the bird. They were able to grab the bird and place it in a cage.
The Bald Eagle was taken to The Raptor Center of Illinois.
This is what they wrote on Facebook:
“We got a call to try to rescue this big Bald Eagle today. She was down on the side of the road near Lock and Dam 18, near Gladstone IL. Many thanks to Tracy Jones, our fearless Raptor rescuer. (This is his 4th Eagle) We fear the worst for this one as her right wing is severely broken. (bone sticking out) We can only assume she got hit while trying to feed on a dead raccoon in the road. She is on the road to The Raptor Center of Illinois. Please wish her the best.”
