IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A special state audit has identified more than $57,000 in improper and unsupported purchases made through the University of Iowa dental school.
A report released Thursday says the audit covered transactions made Aug. 1, 2012, through Aug. 31, 2016, by a woman working as an administrative specialist for the Periodontics Department. The improper purchases included gift cards, clothing, shoes, computer equipment and accessories.
The report also says the woman, Amanda Shumaker, altered old invoices to make them agree with some of the improper purchases. A routine review in July 2016 turned up discrepancies in Shumaker’s purchasing records, and she was placed on leave effective Aug. 1, 2016.
The report says the 34-year-old died less than three weeks later. An obituary says Shumaker died at a Davenport hospital.
