CHICAGO (AP) — The National Weather Service in Chicago is warning of hazardous beach conditions along Lake Michigan in Chicago, Cook County and northwestern Indiana.

Meteorologists say beachgoers should stay out of the water Friday because conditions could make swimming dangerous.

Waves between 3 and 6 feet, and strong rip and structural currents are expected through Friday evening.

The weather service says rip currents are powerful channels of water that flow quickly from shore. They occur most often at low spots or breaks in sandbars. Structural currents form along piers where longshore currents and wave action flow into the structure. Both rip and structural currents can sweep people into deeper water.

A small craft advisory also has been issued until 6 p.m. Friday due to strong wind speeds.
