Man captured after attacking and running away from Bettendorf police during traffic stop

BETTENDORF, Iowa - A man who punched an officer and ran away during a traffic stop shortly before midnight Thursday, March 8 was captured a few minutes later near Burlington Coat Factory.

28-year-old Benjamin Reid was initially stopped for speeding at the intersection of E. Locust Street and E. Kimberly Road, according to Bettendorf Police.

Reid pulled at the officer's belt and punched him several times. When the officer maced Reid, he ran toward I-74, behind Burlington Coat Factory a few hundred yards away.

Responding officers formed a perimeter at the scene and captured Reid within minutes. No one was hurt.

After Bettendorf police took him into custody, they found a pair of silver brass knuckles tied to a bandana in Reid's back pocket.

He was charged with assaulting and disarming an officer, carrying a weapon, interfering with official acts, and speeding.
