DYERSVILLE, Iowa -- A 20-year-old man has been charged with second-degree criminal mischief in connection to the vandalism at the Field of Dreams.

Damage was reported at the 1989 movie site back in January.  On Tuesday the 23rd workers found the damage reporting that a vehicle had made deep gashes in the outfield and damaged a sprinkler system.

Austin Pape surrendered to the Dubuque County Sheriff's Department on Thursday, February 1st.  He was arrested on a warrant previously requested by the Dyersville Police Department.

Police Chief Brent Schroeder said they had conducted a "lengthy investigation" leading up to the arrest.  Pape had been a person of interest in the case and Chief Schroeder said he was cooperative with investigators.

Pape has since been released from custody.  The Associated Press reports that Pape's attorney said the defendant will not plead guilty and expects to work on a resolution with prosecutors.

The repairs are estimated to cost about $14,300, according to AP.
