DAVENPORT, Iowa -- One Davenport man was shot and killed and two Davenport police officers injured, when police responded to reports of an early-morning burglary on Sunday, November 19th.

Police have identified the officers as Justin King, who has been with the Davenport Police Department since December 2012, and Brenda Waline, who has been with the department since December 1999.

Police say the suspect, who has been identified as Matthew Donald Tobin, 26, of Davenport, was pronounced dead on scene.

Davenport Police responded to a call for a burglary in progress in the area of East 12th Street and Iowa Street, near the Sacred Heart Cathedral around 5:15 a.m.

Residents in the same apartment building say they called police after hearing loud noises coming from the upstairs unit. That upstairs apartment had been vacant for a couple of weeks.

According to a press release from Davenport Police, officers King and Waline confronted Tobin, who was armed inside the apartment, and exchanged gunfire. Police say Tobin was shot and killed and Officer King was hit in the head.

Both officers were taken to Genesis East with non-life threatening injuries, police say, where Officer King underwent emergency surgery.

An autopsy is pending for Matthew Tobin.

An investigation by the Scott County Sheriff's Office is on-going.
