Structural damage prompts evacuation at Clinton County Courthouse

The Clinton County Courthouse on North 2nd Street was evacuated because of structural damage, according to a report by the Clinton Herald.

CLINTON, Iowa --  The Clinton County Courthouse on North 2nd Street was evacuated because of structural damage, according to a report by the Clinton Herald.

The building was evacuated around 10 a.m., Thursday, August 3rd, after maintenance staff noticed a dislodged rusted beam.   The courthouse will remain closed all day and any court activity will take place at the Clinton County Administration building.

"At this point it's a precautionary action just so we don't jeopardize anyone's safety," says Dan Srp, Clinton County Supervisor.

The Courthouse was dedicated in 1897 and officials say old age could be the cause.

An engineer was expected to come in around noon to see how much damage was caused to the building.

It's still unclear when it will open back up again.
