UPDATE:

ROCK ISLAND -- An early morning fire in Rock Island caused extensive damage to a chiropractic office and an upper floor apartment.

Fire officials said the fire at 4510 7th Ave., a building that houses Brien Chiropractic and an apartment, began sometime before 4:20 a.m. The fire began on the outside of the building on a second floor deck and spread into the apartment. Firefighters knocked the blaze down in about 20 minutes, but not before it caused $100,000 in damage. Two residents of the apartment were home at the time, but escaped unharmed. They are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Rock Island Fire Marshal  Greg Marty determined the fire was caused by a fire pit that was used on the second-floor deck the night before that was not properly extinguished. Overnight wind re-ignited the fire and helped it spread into the building, theMarty added, noting the fire cause is being ruled accidental.

The fire marshal recommends residents follow these guidelines for using recreational fire pits.
