Suspect captured in deadly shooting near Moline grocery store

Authorities arrived to find a man dead from apparent gunshot wounds.

MOLINE, Illinois — Police were on the scene of a fatal shooting at the Westwood Terrace Apartments Thursday, February 2, 2017. The shooting happened in the 2200 block of 1st Street A, near the Jewel Osco around 10 p.m.

Moline police say they received several reports of shots fired. Authorities arrived to find a man dead from apparent gunshot wounds. Police also say that a driver in a red 4-door vehicle ran into apartment fencing before fleeing the scene.

The victim was identified Friday, Feb. 3 as 23-year-old Keswan T. Simmons of Bettendorf. An autopsy was performed and the cause of death was determined to be a gunshot wound to the chest, said Rock Island County Coroner Brian Gustafson.

Detective Scott Williams confirmed that around 3:30 a.m., 22-year-old Kaleb J. Mallek was taken into custody in Iowa city. He was arrested for aggravated battery with a firearm.

Williams said Mallek was being held in Iowa City on a $1 million bond.  Additional charges are pending and Moline Police will later meet with the Rock Island State's Attorney to seek extradition.
