Davenport mom, 3-year-old safe after carjacking

The suspect is described by Davenport police as a black man wearing dark clothing. The vehicle is a 2012 maroon Buick Enclave with Illinois plates.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — A man fought with a mother who was putting her 3-year-old child into her car, and drove off the with vehicle, says Davenport police.

Police were called to the 4100 block of Elsie Avenue around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, and say that a mother had set down her car keys on the driver's seat while she was securing her child in the passenger seat. A man grabbed the keys and tried to get into the vehicle.

Juanita Span watches the woman's child and says she witnessed it happen, "I heard her say 'What are you doing, what are you doing?"

The two fought over the keys, but she was pushed to the ground. She was able to get her child out of the vehicle before he took off with it.

"She worked hard, she worked so hard to get that car and to have someone just come and take it," said Span.

Sgt. Mark Berger, from the Davenport Police Department says the best thing people can do is be aware of their surroundings, "It’s what makes it easier for criminals at times, because we’re complacent in what we do, because it’s so repetitive and we do it all the time. The more that we pay attention to what’s around us a little bit more the better off we’re going to be."

No injuries were reported.
