Icy I-80 Bridge causes multiple crashes

LECLAIRE, Iowa — The I-80 Bridge over the Mississippi River has iced over, and police are asking drivers to use alternate routes.

Illinois State Police said there were several multiple-vehicle crashes during the afternoon of Sunday, December 18, 2016.

Around 2 p.m., a crash had traffic backed up on I-80 eastbound near LeClaire, according to the Iowa DOT. Google was reporting a 14 minute traffic delay eastbound and an 8 minute delay westbound.

A short time later, another accident on the Illinois side diverted drivers.

Police said around four vehicles were involved, and two people had minor injuries.

Iowa and Illinois Department of Transportation crews were working to treat the icy bridge.
