“Bikes for brains” giveaway at Martin Luther King Center gives the gift of wheels

The money raised should be enough for about 120 new bikes.

ROCK ISLAND -- The community is teaming up to help as many children as possible get their Christmas wish with a bike giveaway.

Today, the organization "Bikes for Brains" gave away dozens of bikes to kids in need at the Martin Luther King Center in Rock Island.

The organization believes kids need only two toys in life: blocks and a bike. Organizers said for many of the kids, it's the time first time they've ever got their very own bike.

"They`re so excited, they want to ride the bikes home," Sandy Seeley-Copley, co-chairman of Bikes for Brains, said. "They don`t care that there`s snow on the sidewalks there is snow in the parking lots they want to ride the bikes home."

This is the 15th annual bike and helmet giveaway.

The organization's goal is to raise 8,000. That's enough for 120 bikes.
