Bicyclist hauling cans dies after being struck by vehicle in Moline

A man on a bike died after being struck by a vehicle just west of Riverside Park, police said.

MOLINE, Illinois -- A man on a bike died after being struck by a vehicle just west of Riverside Park, police said.

The bicyclist had a bag of cans with him on his bike when the collision happened just before 8 a.m., on Monday, December 12, 2016, according to an officer with the Moline Police Department.   Initial reports indicate that he was crossing the intersection of 6th Avenue and 26th Street when he was hit.

One person who said he witnessed the incident said the man was walking his bike across the road when the collision happened.

According to a statement from Det. Scott Williams, the man was hit by a white Chevy van.   He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The intersection remained blocked to traffic more than an hour after the deadly collision.  As of 9 a.m. there was no detour set in place.
