Donations of canned food earns movie passes in Cedar Rapids

In 2015, the event collected 16,050 cans. This year’s goal is 20,000 cans.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Movie buffs in Cedar Rapids can catch a show and help feed the hungry this weekend.

The Salvation Army and Wehrenberg Theatre have teamed up to offer patrons a free movie pass for matinees this Saturday with the donation of five cans of food. Those who donate 15 cans of food get a pass to see a movie on another day.

The food collected in the drive will go to support The Salvation Army food pantry and meal program.

In 2015, the event collected 16,050 cans. This year’s goal is 20,000 cans.

Also this weekend, two Cedar Rapids businesses will be hosting a Toys for Tots drive. Toys can be dropped off or purchased at Fleck Sales beverage distributor and Theisen’s farm and auto stores in Cedar Rapids.
