Citizens help bring armed driver into custody after Burlington crash

BURLINGTON, Iowa — One man is in custody and a gun has been confiscated following a vehicle accident caused by a an erratic driver in Burlington. It happened around 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 1.

An officer observed driving erratically throughout the south hill neighborhood and Elm Street. The officer tried to catch up with the vehicle, which was several blocks ahead. The driver then ran a stop sign at Spruce and South Ninth Street and collided with a truck and a light pole, says police.

Antoine Tellis, 21, tried to climb out of the vehicle’s window while armed with a handgun. Tellis was taken into custody with the help of two other citizens. The handgun was confiscated and the driver of the truck was treated for injuries, says police.

Tellis is charged with three felonies and five misdemeanors, including charges of possession with intent to deliver, felony eluding and reckless driving. After he was treated for injuries, he was taken to the Des Moines County Correctional Facility where he is held on $5,000 bond.
