MUSCATINE, Iowa - A Muscatine man made a hefty donation -- one that weighed in at more than five tons.
On Wednesday, November 30, 2016, Troy 'Stinky' Philpott dropped off 11,400 pounds of food at the Freezin' for Food drive.
"Every year, I'm just like, 'Man, I really wish there was more.' And then, boom, from out of nowhere, I have sponsors or family or friends that step up," said Philpott.
Phillpott collects all the food during his annual haunted house, which he creates in his own home. 'Stinky's House of Horrors' takes over his garage, basement, living room and kitchen, and the only cost to enter is a non-perishable food item.
Philpott says the line to get in often stretches down the block.
"We raised, I'm going to say a third of it, in about four hours," said Philpott.
With the help of some friends, Philpott delivered the food on Wednesday morning to the giant Iowa Hawkeye truck parked in the Hy-Vee lot off Highway 61. The food drive, organized by Vintage Sound 93.1 FM radio, benefits the Salvation Army of Muscatine.
"We know that there are families that aren't able to feed their children, and we know that there are families that aren't able to give toys to their kids at Christmas. And that's just not acceptable," said Jamie Hopkins, the station's general manager.
And even with this year's record-setting donation, Philpott wishes he could give more.
"It's kind of a no-brainer. I wish everybody would do this," he said.
