Davenport parks burn to make way for new growth

Despite the warm and windy conditions, workers went ahead with a big project

DAVENPORT, Iowa — Despite the warm and windy conditions, workers went ahead with a big project. Crews sparked a prairie burn in Fejevary Park and at Prairie Heights Park on Thursday, Nov. 17.

This is done every three years to remove the invasive species, but this year they had to wait longer in the season to make sure it all worked.

"Look around, the grass is still green, there' still plants, they're still flowering.  So, in order to get a good burn it has to be dry," said Billy Fisher, Urban Conservationist.

The non-native plants have a very short root system and are killed by the fire. That gives the native plants an opportunity to spread and thrive.
