ORLANDO, Florida — The bald eagle rescued from a Florida storm drain has died.

Photos of the bird and the story of its rescue on November 10, 2016 made the rounds over the internet.  On Tuesday, November 15, the eagle died, according to a report by WFTV.

Caregivers said that because of the bird’s puncture wounds, fluid had accumulated around its heart and lung, reported WFTV.

At the scene, there were initially two birds, one on top of the other, on the side of a road.  Education Manager Michael Goldman, with the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey to Winter Park Veterinary Hospital – where the bird had been treated – said the birds were likely fighting over territory when they landed on the drain.

As rescuers approached the birds, one flew away and the other fell into the storm drain. Shortly after, the eagle was pulled from the drain.
