Apartment fire closes portion of 34th Avenue in Moline

A fire that started on the deck of an apartment building has forced a portion of 34th Avenue to close.

MOLINE, Illinois -- A fire that started on the back deck of an apartment building has forced a portion of 34th Avenue to close, according to the Moline fire inspector.

The fire was at the three-story apartment building located in the 5500 block of 34th Avenue.  A neighbor who saw it called around 10:20 a.m., Tuesday, November 15, 2016, according to the inspector said.

The fire, which started on the second story, caused responders to close 34th Avenue from 53rd Street to 56th Street.   Firefighters were spotted tearing off some of the roof after the flames were out.

One person had to go to the hospital for evaluation, according to the inspector.

Later Tuesday afternoon, the fire inspector said the blaze remains under investigation. The American Red Cross is assisting residents in 11 apartments that were damaged. The building has no working water or electricity as a result of the fire.
