DAVENPORT, Iowa-- For the Humane Society of Scott County, seeing new meowing faces is a daily ordeal. But the amount of visitors now completely outweighs the space.
In just five minutes, two new strays join over 200 cats currently held in the shelter.
50 cats fill the adoption area, and there's an additional 160 felines in the stray room.
"Cats may have to sit back in strays until cats get adopted and we're able to move them up into adoption," says the shelter executive director Pat Arndt.
That's why the shelter is looking into something new called trap, neuter, and release program.
"A cat is trapped, and it's taken into the vet, spayed, rabies shots, and then it's released," says Arndt.
The program would cut down the number of cats in shelters, and it would control the population on the outside.
"They will live out their life there, but you're not having to be concerned about new cats coming in," says Arndt.
The program has to be approved by the Davenport City Council and several aldermen said they are already in support.
