North American Strongman National Championships held in Davenport this weekend

Athletes are vying for a spot at the World Championships, which will be held next March in Ohio.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — Some of the strongest men and women from around the country are competing this weekend in the Quad Cities. More than 250 athletes are in town for the North American Strongman National Championships.

On Friday, Oct. 28, they lifted giant dumbbells at the River Center, competing to lift the most reps in 60 seconds.

Even though it's a Strongman competition, there are plenty of ladies lifting weights as well.

"It's very driving to be able to pick up weight that the men can pick up, some of the smaller men, to be able to lift and do more reps than some of the smaller guys. I mean they're all very good athletes, but to be able to compete with the guys is quite exciting," said competitor Emily Ware.

The competition continues all day on Saturday.
