Fire at Burlington community living home ‘intentionally set’ by resident, police say

A house used as a supported community living home suffered an estimated $30,000 worth of damage after a fire broke out.

BURLINGTON, Iowa — A house used as a supported community living home sustained an estimated $30,000 worth of damage after a fire broke out. Burlington firefighters were called to the scene around 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 23.

The fire was contained to a second floor bedroom and attic space, which was under control within a few minutes, says the Burlington Fire Department. Three residents and an employee inside the home were able to get out of the house without injury.

A day later, Lt. Jeff Klein with the Burlington Police Department said that "the fire had been intentionally set and a suspect was identified."

Klein said that one of the developmentally disabled clients receiving residential services from the home was responsible for starting the fire.  That person was "placed into a secured environment" and was receiving treatment and an evaluation.
