ANAMOSA, Iowa — A corrections officer was assaulted by an inmate at the Anamosa State Penitentiary, according to a statement from the Department of Corrections.

The alleged assault happened shortly before 11 p.m. on Wednesday, October 19, 2016.  An offender, 26-year-old Justin Kestner, “was able to remove himself from a Health Services side room and immediately began to assault an ASP Correctional Officer utilizing a crude piece of metal,” read the department’s statement.

Staff and security quickly restrained Kestner, according to the statement, and he was placed in segregation.

The officer suffered multiple bruises to the face, and was taken to a nearby medical facility, the statement said.  The officer was treated and released.  Despite the injuries not being life threatening “the Department considers this incident a serious assault…”

According to the statement, Kestner is serving a 35-year sentence for first degree theft out of Woodbury County, also for habitual property offender and operating a vehicle without owner consent out of Lee County.

ASP investigative staff are looking into the incident. Results will be sent to the Jones County Attorney for prosecution, said the statement.
