DAVENPORT, Iowa - The 31st annual Student Hunger Drive has officially started.

Every year 16 area high school students collect food donations for six weeks. That food goes to the River Bend Food Bank. It serves 22 counties in Iowa and Illinois and more than 125,000 families.

"I when I see all these kids collecting food I don`t think about them filling our warehouse, I think about them feeding their classmates," said executive director, Mike Miller.

To celebrate the start of this year's drive a kickoff party was held, where student competed in a talent show. The winner gets 2,000 pounds of food to add to their collection.

However, these students know there's a lot more on the line than 2,000 pounds.

"One out of every five students in the Quad Cities is hungry so we need to help people out, because none of us can even imagine what it would be like to go through that," said Tim Schwartz, a student at QC Christian.

The winner of this year's talent show was Rivermont Collegiate. Second place didn't go empty-handed, QC Christian walked away with 1,000 pounds of food.

The Student Hunger Drive runs through early November.
