BETTENDORF, Iowa -The iconic former Lodge Hotel is now being reduced to rubble.

Crews started demolishing the hotel in Bettendorf.

Mayor Bob Gallagher says it used to serve as a great amenity for the city, but now it's become a nuisance as several people have trespassed and even vandalized the building.

Many people stopped to watch. There were even cars lined up on Spruce Hills, people hoping to catch a glimpse from there.

Hilary Milo brought her kids to watch. She had her wedding reception there 10 years ago, “It's just such a huge landmark and very crazy to see it go down like this.”

Crews say it will take until the end of the year to completely tear down the building.

Mayor Gallagher says there's been interest from developers but as of right now there are no concrete plans on what will go there.
