DAVENPORT, Iowa — A Solon, Iowa couple was sentenced Aug. 31 in district court to four years of probation for false statements make to the Social Security Administration, says States Attorney Kevin VanderSchel.
Donna and Randall Hanson pleaded guilty in May 2016 to making false statements. Donna also pleaded guilty to failure to disclose information to the administration.
Donna received disability income benefits since January 2000. During reviews in 2005, 2010, and 2014, she reported that she was not married to Randall, says the plea agreement. Randall also signed a statement indicating that they were not married.
In 2003, the couple had told the VA that they were married, which impacted the amount of benefits that Randall received. That year, the VA issued a ruling that determined the two had been married since October 1999, says the plea agreement.
Because of the false statements, Donna was overpaid by approximately $24,700. Restitution will be determined at a later date.
