Illinois comptroller wants ‘No budget, no pay’ for lawmakers

Munger wants to withhold state lawmakers pay until they agree on a budget deal.

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois — Illinois' comptroller Leslie Munger is taking a new approach to get lawmakers to pass a full, balanced budget. She proposed a No Budget, No Pay law on Wednesday, Aug. 17.

"No budget, no pay. It's actually been done in other states like California and what a surprise they actually start passing balanced budgets on time," said Munger.

Munger wants to withhold state lawmakers pay until they agree on a budget deal. Former governor Pat Quinn tried passing the same law in 2013, but it failed.

Illinois is currently operating under a temporary budget, which was intended to keep the state running for six months.
