STERLING, Illinois-- The red hot franks fly off the flame for Sterling, Illinois' 40th annual Hot Dog Day.

The first Friday in August is always reserved for hundreds of people to get together, stand in line and eat the all American favorite.

5,700 hot dogs were served up at eight different stands throughout the downtown this year. That's 1,000 more dogs than last year.

"We sell hot dogs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. or while supplies last because they go pretty quick," says organizer Janna Groharing with Sterling Main Street.

What takes a team to prepare takes an army to eat.

And the best part about it all, customers say, the dogs only cost a quarter.

And while you can't beat the bargain, this day is all about bringing the community together.

"Really that's what we want. It's just to get families out, get people out to enjoy the downtown, to enjoy a beautiful day. A quarter a hot dog is a great price to pay for a day of family fun," says Groharing.

The group is building a stronger community one dog at a time.
