ROCK ISLAND — The public is invited to tour the largest working towboat on the Mississippi River this week at River Heritage Park in downtown Davenport.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Rock Island District is celebrating it’s 150th anniversary. As part of the celebration, it will be hosting an open house on the Motor Vessel Mississippi on Aug. 2 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The vessel will be docked at River Heritage Park. The open house is free to the public and will include tours of the vessel as well as displays depicting the 150-year history of the Rock Island District.

The MV Mississippi is the largest towboat on the Mississippi River. It is owned and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It spends most of the year as a working towboat but it is also used to transport the Presidentially-appointed Mississippi River Commission when the commission conducts inspection of Corps project along the River. The MRC will conduct an inspection tour on portions of the Upper Mississippi River the first two weeks of August to include stops in the Quad Cities August 1 and 2.
