The unemployment rate in Illinois for African American males is nearly 15% three times higher than the state average and the highest in the nation for black men.

MOLINE, Illinois - Emmanual Fiagan is a father of three who's been without a job for three months.

"I lost my job, I got laid off from John Deere so I'm looking for a job," said Fiagan.

Now his full time job, is finding a job.

"Yeah I don't know if I can afford for the family, to help them because my kids will start school now so I'm thinking about all those," said Fiagan.

He's not the only one who can't find a job the unemployment rate in Illinois for African American males is nearly 15% three times higher than the state average and the highest in the nation for black men.

"If you look at the statistics especially for schools like Rocky the largest single group of people not getting their high school diplomas is African American males," said Bruce Storey, Director of Educational Services at Black Hawk Community College.

Overall, unemployment here in the Quad Cities is more than 5% and Storey said more jobs are requiring an education and the Quad Cities is falling behind.

"The number of people who have an associates degree here in the Quad Cities is lower than it should be and so we need to work on that," said Storey.

There are resources like the one at Black Hawk College aimed at helping people who are out of work and may need more education.

"We're there to help them do a career assessment, figure out what they want to do, do their resume, cover letter, where to find jobs," said Storey.

For Fiagan who's been working with Black Hawk College, Storey said he's been doing all of the right things.

"I got hope that I'll find another job," said Fiagan.
