ROCK ISLAND, Illinois-- The family of an infant who, police say, was murdered is speaking out.

Tuesday, July 26, 2016 was a day Angela Burmeister had been waiting on for almost a year.

"Eli Brewer is my nephew. I would like to get justice for him," says Burmeister.

Three month old Eli Brewer of Rock Island was found dead in 2015. In July of 2016, his stepfather, Robert J. Brewer Jr., was arrested and charged with first degree murder. And while family members of the baby are happy the case is finally being heard, questions remain.

Now, a year later, there was a preliminary hearing for the case in the Rock Island County Courthouse. That hearing was continued on Tuesday because Brewer and his attorney are fighting camera in the courtroom.

"I would like to see everyone involved be in trouble for it," says family friend Danielle Garth.

Burmeister and Garth say something with the case isn't sitting right, and they say they believe there's more to the story.

"I don't, I don't believe it's just him. And honestly, on a $1 million bond first degree murder charge, he's gonna talk," says Burmeister.

And while Eli rests alone, his army of supporters are fighting for him.

"How can he be anyone's problem, or how could anyone take anything out on an innocent child?" says Garth.

"That baby was innocent. That baby, three months old, how are you going to do that to him like that?" says Burmeister.

The preliminary hearing is set for August 9.
