WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — One Iowa county is avoiding an expensive medication bill by placing a jail inmate on house arrest while he is awaiting trial.
Fayette County prosecutors asked a judge to approve putting Ismael Alfaro, 34, on house arrest because of the cost of his HIV medications, the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports.
Alfaro’s medication costs about $3,000 a month. With him under home arrest, Alfaro will have to pay for his medication.
Alfaro has pleaded not guilty to charges of criminally transmitting HIV and third-degree sexual assault. He is scheduled for trial on July 27.
