CORDOVA, Illinois -- As part of the process in closing the Quad Cities and Clinton nuclear stations, Exelon has formally notified grid operator PJM Interconnection about its plans to close the Generating Station in Cordova, Illinois on June 1, 2018.
Exelon announced this latest step in the process on Thursday, July 7, 2016. During the week of June 20, Exelon notified the Nuclear Regulatory Commission of the closures.
Exelon will continue to notify regulators, grid operators, and state agencies of the upcoming closures.
“We continue to work with all stakeholders to ensure the retirement of these plants is carried out responsibly, safely and with consideration to the employees and the communities in which the plants operate,” said Chris Crane, Exelon president and CEO. “We are committed to being transparent at every step in the process, and that includes giving grid operators ample time to prepare for the loss of these units.”
The announcement that Exelon was planning to close the two facilities came in early June 2016 when Illinois lawmakers failed to pass legislation that would help keep the plants afloat. The Clinton Power Station will close June 1, 2017 and the Quad Cities Generating Station will close June 1, 2018.
The Clinton Power Station employs about 700 workers and the Quad Cities Generating Station employs about 900 workers. Exelon said that staff transitions are expected within six months after the facilities close.
