EPWORTH, Iowa (AP) — Officials in Dubuque County are considering cracking down on a smelly composting operation that for years has drawn complaints from residents of the small city of Epworth.

The Telegraph Herald reports county supervisors met Monday, June 13, 2016 with Epworth’s mayor, a council member and a resident to discuss the issue of odors from Midwest Organic Solutions. The business is on U.S. Highway 20, between Farley and Epworth.

“Midwest Organic Solutions has a comprehensive food recycling program targeting business and communities in and around Dubuque Iowa. Our mission is simple: Help reduce the amount of organic waste ending up in our landfills, while turning food waste into a usable resource,” says a description on the company’s website.

Council member Garry Gansen says the problem has continued for four years and it’s time for the county to take action.

Supervisor Daryl Klein asked the county attorney to research possible enforcement actions.

Midwest’s owners didn’t attend the meeting. Co-owner Craig Kluesner earlier said the company was working to limit odors.
