DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — Davenport officials are looking to install surveillance cameras around the city’s cemetery as part of an effort to curb vandalism there.
Davenport Alderman Ray Ambrose told the Quad-City Times that would-be vandals might have second thoughts if they knew they were being watched.
Ambrose was responding to the latest instance of vandalism at City Cemetery that occurred sometime between the conclusion of a Memorial Day weekend open house and Thursday morning.
At least six tombstones were knocked off their bases and one was broken, resulting in an estimated $1,600 in damage.
Interim senior parks manager Betsy Tubbs says that in mid-April, 21 tombstones were toppled or broken, resulting in an estimated $4,840 in damage.
