LOCKPORT, Ill. (AP) — Suburban Chicago authorities are trying to determine who is behind the vandalism of headstones at a cemetery during the Memorial Day weekend.
Lockport Police Chief Terrence Lemming said Wednesday that 79 graves at the Lockport Cemetery were damaged between late Friday and early Saturday.
Authorities say one or more persons pushed over the grave memorials and headstones, many of which had been in place for more than 100 years and are irreplaceable. The cemetery southwest of Chicago is the final resting place of war veterans, including some who fought in the Civil War.
