City paints over mural created by students in Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Misdirected emails could be to blame for city crews painting over a giant mural created by Des Moines students.

Des Moines public works director Jonathan Gano told The Des Moines Register he supported plans for a mural painted by students on a flood wall outside the school district's Central Campus in Des Moines. Gano says he was ready to discuss details but communication stopped in the fall.

Although the Des Moines school district approved the mural, emails sent to Gano apparently had the wrong address, so he never received them. After not hearing from Gano, project coordinators thought they had the city's approval.

On Monday, project organizers learned the mural, which included the faces of Cesar Chavez and Maya Angelou, was painted over by the city's graffiti removal workers.
