$4 million worth of meth found in tailgate of truck stopped for speeding in Illinois

What started as a traffic stop for speeding, became a major drug bust when police found 44 pounds of methamphetamine in the tailgate of a pickup truck.

DOWNERS GROVE, Illinois – What started as a traffic stop for speeding, became a major drug bust when police found 44 pounds of methamphetamine in the tailgate of a pickup truck.

Illinois State Police stopped a gray pickup truck for allegedly speeding northbound on Interstate 55 at Lemont Avenue, just before 2:45 p.m. Monday, May 16, 2016.

“A K9 was requested to assist in the traffic stop, and the K9 alerted to the presence of the odor of narcotics,” said a May 17 statement from Illinois State Police.

Investigators searched the truck and said they found 44 pounds of methamphetamine in the tailgate, the statement said.  The street value of the meth they seized was estimated at four-million dollars.

The driver, 37-year-old Francisco Navarro Montes of Columbus, Ohio, was arrested for possession of methamphetamine and for driving on a suspended license.  Navarro Montes was held in the DuPage County Jail.
