DAVENPORT, Iowa - A Blue Mass was held in Davenport as a way to honor the men and women who risk their lives to save other.

"They are looking for one word and that's just a little thank you," said Chaplain, Mathew Peterson of the Davenport Police Department.

First responders hold a job that isn't easy and often face a lot of scrutiny.

Not to mention their jobs are dangerous. Last year nearly 130 police officers were killed in the line of duty and nearly 100 firefighters lost their lives.

"I say a prayer every single day on my way to a shift and I`ve been saying it everyday for 31 years. It's basically you know to ask for god to look over me and see that I get home safe and sound and if I don`t I ask that he look over my family," said Sgt. George Ramos, of the Bettendorf Police Department.

The mass connects first responders and the community together and shows first responders support.

The Knights of Columbus has put on the Blue Mass for the last two years and plan on making it a yearly tradition.
