DAVENPORT, Iowa-- Ben Kantner and a group of volunteers are spending their day building a Dragon Playground  for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Quad Cities.

It's a project two years in the making but now it's something that's close to becoming a reality.

The playground is made of mostly donated materials. Dozens of old tires, rocks and mulch.  Kantner says the jungle gym's design was inspired by church's dedication to staying connected to nature.

"The dragon idea kind of represents creativity and imagination and that's what we want to inspire in our kids,"  He says.

For the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Quad Cities, the Dragon Playground is a solution to a very old problem. Vandals destroyed the church's old playground.

"They came in and took off all the floor boards and all the walls of it. So we showed up to church one day and it was gone," says volunteer, Dane Moulton.

Initially the church set aside about $5,000 to replace their playground, but Kantner says the church has not had to use much due to the donations from the community.

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Quad Cities will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony unveiling their Dragon Playground June 5.
