Woman rescued after fall from bridge over the Rock River

COLONA, Illinois - A woman was rescued from an island in the Rock River after she reportedly fell from a railroad bridge.

Initial reports indicated the woman, who is in her twenties, injured her leg when she fell from a railroad bridge over the water Friday morning, May 13, 2016.  Emergency responders were sent to the railroad bridge over the river, just north of Kershaw Courts in Colona, at about 9:20 a.m.

The woman actually fell from a bridge support Thursday evening, May 12 after crossing the railroad bridge and climbing down the bridge support to get to the island, according to witnesses who camped with her overnight.

She injured her leg but did not immediately seek medical treatment.  When she awoke Friday morning she was unable to stand, the witnesses said.

The woman was taken by boat to get medical care.
