Hy-Vee has recalled frozen store-brand vegetable fried rice and chicken fried rice products because of possible Listeria contamination.
The recall involves bags with use-by dates of November 5, 2017 or earlier. The recalled products were sold at Hy-Vee stores in eight states, including Iowa and Illinois, between July 24, 2014 and May 12, 2016. The recalled one-pound bags of vegetable fried rice bags have UPC number 000007545012530; the recalled 20-ounce bags of chicken fried rice have UPC number 00754501025290.
The recall was issued after the supplier, Ajinomoto Windsor, announced they were recalling certain frozen foods due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. No illness has been reported as of May 13.
“Listeria monocytogenes is an organism, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women,” the recall notice said.
“Out of an abundance of caution, Hy-Vee is recalling these two products from all of its stores,” said a statement from Hy-Vee issued Friday, May 13.
Customers who bought the recalled product should throw it out, or return it to their local Hy-Vee store for a full refund.
