Passengers able to escape vehicle before it engulfed in flames in Whiteside County

A driver fell asleep at the wheel but no one was seriously injured after the car rolled over in Whiteside County, Illinois just before 4 p.m. Friday, May 13.

WHITESIDE COUNTY, Illinois — A driver fell asleep at the wheel but no one was seriously injured after the car rolled over in Whiteside County, Illinois just before 4 p.m. Friday, May 13.

Whiteside County Sheriff’s deputies say driver Jay Sudak, 55, of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin feel asleep while driving and crashed on Interstate 88 near mile marker 29. The car entered the median and rolled into the north ditch.

Sudak and his passenger were able to get out of the vehicle before it became engulfed in flames. Both he and his passenger were treated on scene.

Sudak was cited for improper lane usage and released on a notice to appear in court.

Whiteside County was assisted by the Illinois State Police, Prophetstown Police, Tampico Police and Prophetstown Fire and EMS.
