Iowa horse will run in Kentucky Derby with 21 to 1 odds

The 142nd Kentucky Derby is Saturday, May 7, and one of the horses has an Iowa connection.

ANKENY, Iowa — The 142nd Kentucky Derby is Saturday, May 7, and one of the horses has an Iowa connection.

The horse "Brody's Cause" is owned by the Albaugh family from the Des Moines area. Right now his odds are at 21 to 1 according to Kentucky Derby's webpage, so it's not a total longshot.

The thoroughbred received the 19th post position on the auxiliary gate, just one from the far outside, reports WHO.

"We started at the bottom and now to be at the very top, it's so rewarding," said Jason Loutsch, General Manager of Albaugh Family Stables.

"It's such a tough business, the lows are really low and the highs are really high. To be a part of the Kentucky Derby this year it's an unbelievable accomplishment. We appreciate it so much because we know how hard it is to get to that level."

Twenty-two horses will race. Last year's winner American Pharaoh - the first Triple Crown winner since 1978 - isn't competing this year but officials say they are expecting to have about 200,000 people turn out for the race.
