DAVENPORT, Iowa -Davenport's uptick in gun violence concerns police and alerts neighborhoods.

"I was sitting watching TV just right behind the window, and I heard five shots all in a row," recalled a recent witness.  "Boom, boom, boom -- just like that."

Shots fired calls in Davenport included a dozen arrests over a 48-hour period in late March.

"We can't arrest our way out of this," said Davenport Mayor Frank Klipsch.

Reasons why police and community leaders are stepping up efforts to crack down on gun violence.

That includes more neighborhood outreach and presence.

"They've really stepped up their game," said 5th Ward Ald. Rita Rawson.  "Reorganizing how they do their shifts, who they put where, to really focus on and tackle the shots fired calls."

The calls continue to come from a variety of Davenport locations.

The most recent incident happened Saturday, April 9, near stores and restaurants on East Kimberly Road.

City leaders describe police response as effective and efficient.

Davenport is also forming an advisory commission on public safety to involve the community.

"We want to work with all the young people and people of all ages in our community," said Mayor Klipsch.  "Give them positive alternatives and hope."

The city's existing Weed and Seed initiative helps to connect residents one-on-one with officers to receive updates.

The group next meets Tuesday, April 12, at 7 p.m., inside the Community Room of the Davenport Police Department.

"If you know the data and facts, that lessens some of the fear," Ald. Rawson said.  "It's not an unknown.  You know exactly what's going on."

That can help neighborhoods to make informed responses to a dangerous problem.
