DAVENPORT, Iowa- Davenport alderman Bill Boom says he had no idea a young man living at his home was allegedly dealing crystal meth.

Boom's house on 7th Street was raided on Wednesday by Scott County Sheriff's officers in the Special Operations Unit.

Gage Wenthe, 25 was arrested and charged with felony drug possession with intent to deliver, felony conspiracy, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

"I had no knowledge of what he was doing. He kept that hidden from me. I'm devastated by all this," Boom said by telephone on Thursday.

Boom was not home at the time of the raid, and was away on city business at a conference in Austin, Texas.

Boom says he and his late partner had taken Wenthe in six years ago as a homeless and troubled teen, and had helped him get his GED, treatment and counseling.

"His drug use was one of the things I was working with his doctors on, but I had no idea he was dealing behind the scenes. I got him into treatment. I thought we were making progress but that wasn't the case. I was just a person trying to help another human being and drugs obviously won," Boom said.

Police are still investigating, but said in an affidavit that Wenthe admits being a "middle man" for drug dealing in the Quad Cities.

Wenthe is in the Scott County Jail.
