It was late in the evening on Easter Sunday when a driver crashed his car and got hurt trying to avoid a deer.
The crash happened on West Council Hill Road near Council Ridge Road a little after 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 27, 2016, according to a statement from the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office. The Dubuque, Iowa driver was headed eastbound on W. Council Hill Road when he swerved, trying not to hit a deer. His car went off the road and hit a tree.
The driver was hurt and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, the statement said.
The Insurance Information Institute said that if you’re driving at night, it’s important to use high beam headlights when no other cars are around.
“Brake firmly when you notice a deer in or near your path, but stay in your lane,” said the Insurance Information Institute report. “Many serious crashes occur when drivers swerve to avoid a deer and hit another vehicle or lose control of their cars.”
A safety report from the University of Illinois Extension explains that while most deer-vehicle collisions happen in October through December as well as in May and June, they can happen any time of year and usually happen at dawn and dusk.
